A Winter Scene in Chilcotin
by Blades, Ann
The narrative of Tomas’s parents in A Candle for Christmas draws on the tradition of the Tsilhqut’in seasonal quest to ensure the herds survive the winter. The Tsilhqut’in inhabit the plateau region that spreads west from the Fraser River into the coastal range. Archeological evidence confirmed by contemporary elders suggests that the Tsilhqut’in have made the rich timberlands and meadows along the Chilcotin River their home for well over 500 years.
