Naturphilosophie: Giraffe
by Oken, Lorenz

German naturalist Lorenz Oken (1779-1851) was a leading scholar of "naturphilosophie" or the physio-philosophical school of Germany. He published a 14-volume work titled Allgemeine Naturgeschichte between 1833 and 1842, in which he expounded on his theory that "the animal classes are virtually nothing else than a representation of the sense-organs and that they must be arranged in accordance with them." This image shows an illustration of a giraffe drawn by Oken in 1839 and included in his seminal work Allgemeine Naturgeschichte fur alle Stande.
